Alzheimer’s is a significant illness in the United States. Every 65 seconds, someone in the U.S. develops the disease. In fact, Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., and currently, about 5.7 million Americans are living with it.

Alzheimer’s is a degenerative brain disease that slowly and irreversibly destroys the mind, causing extreme memory loss and a decrease in thinking ability. There’s no known cause of Alzheimer’s, but factors like age, family history, and genetics are known to increase someone’s risk of developing it.

While often Alzheimer’s and dementia are typically referred to as the same, they are actually different. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, making up for approximately 60% to 80% of all dementia cases. But dementia is technically a nonreversible decline in mental function, not a disease. Dementia is a description of a range of symptoms that affect someone’s ability to perform simple, everyday tasks. Symptoms of dementia include memory loss, poor judgment and reasoning, less able to focus, and changes in things like thinking skills and communication skills.
