About Neurosurgery

A neurosurgeon is a medical specialist who treats diseases and conditions affecting the nervous system, which includes the brain, the spine and spinal cord, and the peripheral nerves. Neurosurgeons provide non-operative and surgical treatments.

Our neurosurgeons are board certified and completed a lengthy training program that specifically focused on microscopic surgery of the back, neck and brain. Although most people think of neurosurgeons as “brain surgeons” you might be interested to know a majority of the operations our surgeons perform are spine surgeries.

Unlike other specialties that require only six to twelve months of fellowship training before a physician can begin performing spine-related procedures, neurosurgical training takes place over six to nine years. “Only neurosurgeons are trained during their six or seven year residency to perform procedures inside the lining of the spinal canal called the dura. Thus, spinal cord tumors, arachnoid cysts, syringomyelia, Chiari malformation, spinal cord arteriovenous malformation, diplomyelia or diastematomyelia, tethered spinal cord, spina bifida or myelomeningocele, lipomyelomeningocele, tumors at the junction of the base of the skull and upper cervical spine, nerve root tumors, and a few other diagnoses still fall under the domain of the neurosurgeon.” (Spine Universe)

Our neurosurgeons offer comprehensive evaluations with conservative non surgical treatment options. A neurosurgeons world revolves around the nervous system. We apply the same delicate techniques we use on the brain to your neck and spine. Our patients experience the comfort and peace of mind that their diagnosis and treatment is accurate and minimally invasive. For patients requiring surgery our neurosurgeons offer surgical procedures that can result in: smaller openings/scars, shorter recovery times, less postoperative pain, and shorter hospital stays. Many patients are home the same day or within 24 hours.

Our surgeons offer care 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year. If you become a patient of one of our physicians you can be confident should any complications arise one of our physicians will be there to take care of you.
